Boston police arrested a 40-year-old man Friday evening who they say fired a gun during a road rage incident in the city’s South End neighborhood.
Boston resident Jair Furtado has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and firing a gun within 500 feet of a dwelling in connection with the incident, Boston police said in a press release Saturday.
Officers responded to the area of 145 East Berkeley St. around 10:30 p.m. Friday night for a report of a road rage incident during which a suspect had fired a gun, police said. At the scene, they saw two vehicles stopped at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and East Berkeley Street and handcuffed the driver of the suspect’s vehicle, who was later identified as Furtado.
Officers soon noticed a firearm inside Furtado’s vehicle and called detectives to the scene, police said. The gun was later determined to be a Springfield Hellcat with one round in the chamber and eight rounds in the magazine. They also discovered additional ammunition and a holster inside the vehicle.
Officers soon learned that the incident originated at the intersection of Albany Street and East Berkeley Street, police said. They were told that an argument ensued following a road rage incident, and that Furtado shot at the victim’s vehicle as a result.
Furtado is set to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court, police said.
