Brewster Academy’s Michai White scored 16 points and went 6-for-11 from the field in the team’s 60-47 loss against SPIRE Academy on Monday.
White is the No. 30 recruit in the Class of 2028, according to 247sports. He has seven college scholarship offers from schools like Stanford, Louisville and Penn State.
“It’s my first year at Brewster, it’s been a great year,” White said. “Learning under a great coach like coach (Jason) Smith, teaching me how to be a great point point guard and also teaching me how to play with other high level point guards.”
Although his team lost, the New Jersey native was able to fulfill a goal he’s had since he was in middle school: playing in the Hoophall Classic.
“To finally be able to come play and experience this, it was fun,” he said. “The energy is great, so it was a great experience.”
At the half, Brewster Academy had a slight advantage over SPIRE with the score of 28-23, with White responsible for 14 of those points at halftime.

“At halftime we wanted to talk about playing our pace,” said Smith. “Not allowing us to allow them to speed us up, which they did a good job of doing. So we have to learn from that (and) hopefully going forward, we won’t make the same mistake.”
Smith spoke highly about the development of White and what he’s brought to the team.
“He has a very, very bright future,” Smith said. “We’ve had a lot of tremendous guards during my 26 years at Brewster, and he might, when it’s all said and done, be among the very best that we’ve had.”
“He’s a high character individual,” Smith added. “He strives to be the best at all that he does, whether it’s on the court or in the classroom. … He’s somebody that will make a college coach very happy. He’ll have his choice of colleges when the time comes.”
