New England has one of the scariest haunted houses in the US

Those getting scared at one of the scariest haunted houses in the U.S. are also helping the community.

Yelp named Trail of Terror in Wallingford, Connecticut as one of the top 20 scariest haunted houses in the U.S. It is the only haunted house in New England to make the list.

It’s an outdoor walk-through haunt that takes about an hour. Tickets cost $25 or $40 for the VIP pass. This year’s theme is centered around “The Harvester, a being constructed from an amalgam of the town’s collective fears,” Yelp said.

“Don’t worry about the panic setting in … it’s just time for the harvest,” Yelp wrote.

One reviewer was even impressed by the entry line.

“Their entry line was organized with lots to look at and monsters to entertain you.…The maze itself was long! In a good way! Detailed with great scare actors and very creepy scenery.…If you’re looking for a haunt in the Connecticut area, this is for you! Absolutely worth it,” they wrote.

But it’s not just about scares at this haunted house. It has also raised more than $2.5 million for charity since it opened in 1995.

Its slogan is “We Scare Because We Care.”

“The Trail of Terror is run entirely by volunteers who are as dedicated to community charities as they are to dreadful delights,” Yelp said.

Some of the charities the organization has donated to include Make-A-Wish, a soup kitchen and the humane society.

It was first started by Wayne Barneschi in his front yard.

“Over a quarter century later, the haunted attraction covers 4 acres of woods, is staffed with 200 volunteers a night, and entertains over 20,000 frightened guests every October,” the website states. “Halloween enthusiasts travel from all over the United States to visit the attraction.”
