SOUTHWICK — After a homeowner questioned why their property was valued so much higher than their neighbor’s, a similar-sized home on essentially the same lot size, the town’s new assessor and his staff, with assistance from the state’s Department of Revenue, did a deep dive into the values of homes throughout town and found that over 50% were undervalued.
“Because it’s a revaluation year we were going through the classification process and [DOR] got a sample group of homes … and they went out and did inspections and made observations about the property record cards they had … that led them to a discovery on a certain street that the appreciation factors were inconsistent with what was really going on there,” said Assessor Randy Austin during the Board of Assessors meeting in early October.
He then said the property cards indicated the houses on the street were in poor to fair condition but after a visual inspection of each, they were “nowhere” near that.
