National lifeguard shortage prompts communities to tweak how they recruit

Many people blame the COVID-19 pandemic for the national shortage in lifeguards. Here at home, local communities are seeing a shift in who applies for lifeguard positions — if any do at all.

On average in a good year, Springfield sees 60 to 70 lifeguards to oversee the three public pools and 10 indoor school pools during the summer season, said Joe Federico, the city’s aquatics director.
