NORTHAMPTON — Monday night’s matchup between Northampton and Minnechaug was a highly anticipated rematch of the 2025 Western Mass. semifinals, a game that favored the Blue Devils just last season. While the setting was familiar for most, it was a new challenge for freshman guard Zahara Wilson, one she met with a dominant 29-point performance.
“My thought process was just to push the ball a lot and get them out of their comfort zone,” Wilson said.
The win marks Minnechaug’s first victory over Northampton since 2022, with a final score of 75-35.
Minnechaug’s defensive intensity set the tone early. The Falcons held Northampton scoreless for the first two and a half minutes of the opening quarter, forcing multiple turnovers that they capitalized on. An early steal by senior Cailin O’Brien opened scoring for Minnechaug, and they never looked back.
While Northampton climbed back from a 2-7 deficit, by the end of the first quarter Minnechaug carried a 13-10 lead.
Wilson opened the second frame with a quick basket as the Falcons continued to apply pressure in transitions. Behind Wilson’s twelve-point quarter and Minnechaug’s success on the board, the team extended their lead into the double digits. In the final seconds, Wilson found freshman Abbi Stachowicz in the center for a quick layup and an and-one.
“She’s such a smart player. She understands basketball at such a high level, and she’s so skilled,” Minnechaug coach Ryan Minns said. “She finds her teammates and she’s really good defensively. We put her on their best player to start the game, and she did a great job.”
When the buzzer marked the half, Minnechaug held a dominate 34-14 lead over the Blue Devils, with Wilson accounting for 19 points in the first half alone.
The Falcons came out of halftime with the same energy, netting two quick shots in the opening minute of the third quarter. O’Brien notched five early points in the period, adding to her six from the first half of play. Additional baskets from Ava Manning and Elizabeth Woytowicz rounded out third quarter offensive efforts, pushing their lead to 58-22.
Northampton’s Emme Calkins and Jada Ford attempted to generate late momentum in the fourth, but Minnechaug’s defense never let up.
As the Falcons move forward in the season at 2-0, Minns says the team is focused on the present. Their next step? Keeping the momentum going.
“Just continuing to play hard,” Minns said. “We we’re really happy about today, and we just want to have a great practice tomorrow.”
He also acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead.
“This year especially, we got to be up for every game. We got to play hard every game,” Minns said. “Northampton is really good. We know we’re going to see them again later in the year. It’s going to be a battle with them.”
As for Wilson, her early success has been rooted in a commitment to constant improvement.
“I want to leave the season as a better player than when I came into it,” she said.
Next, Minnechaug will host Longmeadow on Dec. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Northampton (1-1) will travel to Brattleboro Union for 7 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday, Dec. 17 for their following matchup.
