Milton vote could either allow more housing or invite legal action from state

A referendum vote Wednesday will decide the future of a zoning plan meant to increase the supply of housing in Milton, as well as whether the town can expect legal action from the state to force its hand.

The zoning plan, created in order to comply with a 2021 law aimed at transit-oriented housing development, and passed overwhelmingly at Town Meeting in December, would allow the construction of more than 2,000 units of multifamily housing. However, no homes would be guaranteed to be built under the new rules.

Despite the Town Meeting support, however, after the new zoning’s passage, a group of residents opposed to the plan were able to gather sufficient signatures to require a vote, originally scheduled for Tuesday but postponed due to snow, to repeal it.
