Massachusetts has the best fall foliage in New England this weekend

For those enjoying leaf peeping, Massachusetts has the best fall foliage in New England on Oct. 14-15.

Yankee Magazine advised people to travel to North Adams for all the beautiful, bright fall colors.

“They have had a mix of green trees and some color loss, but we feel that there is enough variation in local microclimates with mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes that some good color will be found there this weekend,” the magazine wrote.

Yankee Magazine is known for its fall weather predictions. Last weekend it told readers to go to Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire, with the Granite State falling at the top of the list for fall foliage.

For those planning their trips to North Adams, consider going on Mount Greylock or finding the famous hairpin turn. It also suggests hikes at the Savoy Mountain State Forest, starting the day at Brew Haha and exploring the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA).

Mount Greylock State Reservation was named one of the best locations for fall foliage, according to Mixbook. The website named it the top Massachusetts location and fourth nationally out of 150 locations.

Other New England towns to explore this weekend are Tamworth, New Hampshire; Belgrade, Maine and Bennington, Vermont.

This season has been particularly difficult to predict fall foliage, Yankee Magazine said.

“Usually at this point, a wave of beautiful colors is sweeping south, downhill, and towards the coast of New England,” it read. “This is not at all what we are seeing this year. With very few areas at peak last weekend, most zones were either past peak (muted and brown) or running late (still green or just beginning to turn).”

Although the scenes are still beautiful, it warned, Western Massachusetts might “not see a true peak this year.”
