Massachusetts could see light snow on Wednesday night, followed by an arctic front that is expected to usher in the coldest weekend of the winter.
Wednesday will bring sunny skies and temperatures reaching the mid 20s across the state, with Cape Cod & the Islands reaching the mid 30s. Some snowfall could begin in the late afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, but is expected to wrap up by midnight with little to no accumulation overnight.
Thursday will be relatively mild, with high temperatures in the upper 30s to mid 40s in most regions, but that will quickly give way to a frigid stretch ahead.
Temperatures will drop Friday, then go even lower on Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the teens and lows below zero in some parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service. Those frigid temperatures will be accompanied by high winds on Saturday, with gusts up to 30 to 40 mph in some places creating a wind chill well below zero.
The forecast calls for Saturday high temperatures of 14 degrees in Boston, 18 degrees on Cape Cod & the Islands, 11 degrees in Worcester, 13 degrees in Springfield and 4 degrees in Pittsfield. Overnight lows will be in the single digits across the state and below zero in the Berkshires.
The National Weather Service notes that it could issue a Cold Weather Advisory due to the dangerous cold conditions.
