A Massachusetts man was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after stabbing a man on Halloween while wearing a ninja mask.
Jonathan Galindo, 38, of Waltham, was found guilty of second degree murder for the 2020 killing Kevin Fitzgerald, 61. Galindo will be eligible for parole after 22 years. He has an additional 18 years sentence, to be served concurrently, from his armed burglary conviction.
A little after 9 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2020, Fitzgerald called 911 and told police that he had been stabbed and was dying. When officers arrived at his Alder Street home in Walthan they found him bleeding badly. He was conscious and stated that he had been stabbed by a man wearing a ninja mask.
Fitzgerald was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead just after 10:00 p.m. Fitzgerald had been stabbed in the chest, shoulder and thigh. The stab wound to the chest punctured his lung and was the fatal wound, officials said.
At Fitzgerald’s home, a set of footprints, still visible in the snow, led to a back storm door. The door had a fingerprint on it.
A few days later, investigators learned that a left index finger impression found on the back storm door at the home matched the left index fingerprint of Galindo. Galindo was a former housemate of the Fitzgerald’s who had moved out of the apartment in the spring of 2020.
Inside Fitzgerald’s home, investigators also found blood and a knife on the stairs, which was sent to the State Police Crime Laboratory.
On Nov. 7, 2020, DNA profile results from the handle of the knife returned and matched Galindo.
When officials arrested Galindo, they also found a black mask in his closet at his apartment.
Additionally, Galindo’s phone, which he stated he always had with him, included location data that placed the phone at the Alder Street house at the time of the stabbing. And a search of the phone’s internet search history revealed, repeated searches for “Any recent stabbings in Waltham last night?” on the day after the murder.
Galindo was found guilty by a Middlesex jury on June 2 after a three-week trial that began on May 8th.
