Mass. man sentenced to prison after rape conviction

A Townsend man was sentenced to three to five years in prison last week after being convicted of rape, police announced Wednesday.

John Zagwyn was indicted on a charge of rape in 2019 for raping a woman who was known to him in Townsend in 2017, Townsend Police Chief James Sartel and the office of Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a joint statement.

A Middlesex Superior Court jury found Zagwyn guilty of the rape on April 9, officials said in the statement. Judge Robert L. Ullman sentenced Zagwyn to three to five years in state prison on April 19.

“I want to thank the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office for their skilled and professional handling of this sensitive case,” Sartell said in the statement. “I hope this conviction and sentence bring some measure of comfort and justice to the victim in this case.”
