Mass. man ID’d by police as body found in Charles River in Boston on Tuesday morning

Massachusetts State Police have identified the person who was pulled dead from the Charles River in Boston on Tuesday morning.

A dog walker was alongside the river just east of Massachusetts Avenue around 8:30 a.m., police said, and noticed a body in the water close to the bank.

The department’s marine unit moved the body onto the shoreline, where Boston emergency service personnel determined he was dead, police said. He was identified as an 80-year-old man from Newton.

The following investigation led officers to the man’s apartment in Newton, where detectives spoke with people who knew him, police said. There is no foul play suspected in the man’s death, police said.

The investigation into the 80-year-old man’s death is ongoing as the medical examiner determines the cause and manner, police said.

This is at least the second person found dead in the Charles River in just over a month. On Feb. 12, a 34-year-old homeless man was seen struggling in the water after he’d reportedly jumped from the Longfellow Bridge. His body was recovered from the water in the afternoon, police said.
