FOXBOROUGH — The Patriots used three quarterbacks in team drills during a lightning-delayed practice on Sunday afternoon.
Surprisingly, Malik Cunningham was the first signal caller up, but the dual-threat didn’t attempt a pass. All told, he took five snaps at quarterback over the course of practice and a couple were designed keepers. It’s an interesting new wrinkle to monitor.
As far as Sunday’s passers go, Mac Jones (14 for 18) was noticeably sharper than Bailey Zappe (9 for 16), particularly in the red zone period. Jones was dialed in near the goal line, completing all four of his passes including a pair of touchdowns to Hunter Henry. Jones let the defense hear it, too.

When it was Zappe’s turn, the second-year quarterback went 0 for 4 in the red area and let Marte Mapu get his hands on a pass intended for Matt Sokol, though the rookie didn’t reel it in.
Jones threw the only interception of the day and was his final pass in the team’s two-minute drill. Looking for JuJu Smith-Schuster down the right sideline, Jones found rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez instead, who had blanketed the veteran in coverage.
“He got one on me today,” Smith-Schuster said. “As a rookie I guess you get your one every week. So, he got me. Shoutout to Christian.”
Elsewhere, Trace McSorely was a spectator during team periods and may have been leapfrogged on the depth chart by Cunningham.
