Alex Cora compliments Red Sox fans after Miguel Cabrera received standing ovation

Miguel Cabrera stepped to the plate in the ninth inning of the Tigers-Red Sox game in what was his final at-bat at Fenway Park on Sunday afternoon and was welcomed by a standing ovation.

Cabrera, who’s retiring after a Hall of Fame 21-year career at the end of this season, was honored prior to Friday’s series opener against Detroit and was sent off with a lot of respect by the Fenway Faithful.

It was something that didn’t go unnoticed by Alex Cora.

“That was great. These people, they get it,” Cora told The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham after the 6-3 win. “They understand the history of the game. There’s certain days that you’re like, ‘Oh, come on, the wave?’ and all the stuff when we’re down by a lot. But they understand the history of the game. It was a cool moment.”

Cora also took to social media after the game to express his thanks.

“The 9th inning today was special/unique,” Cora wrote. “That standing ovation to Miguel Cabrera was outstanding. Thank you #RedSoxNation.”

Once Cabrera retires he’ll undoubtedly be elected to the Hall of Fame once he’s eligible. Chris Sale might have played a role in helping him be so successful throughout his career, and Cabrera’s success is something the Red Sox pitcher will certainly remember.
