K-9 killed in fatal N.M. police shootout with suspect

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A suspect and a police K-9 were killed during an officer-involved shooting near the Albuquerque International Sunport, KRQE reported.

APD Chief Harold Medina said the series of events began on May 27 when officers were called to the Comfort Inn Albuquerque Airport to recover stolen tools from a trailer. During that operation, a SWAT team attempted to apprehend the suspect, but he escaped.

Police tracked the suspect to the Comfort Inn. When the suspect attempted to leave the hotel and spotted officers, he fled back inside and then jumped from a second-story window.

K-9 Rebel was deployed and successfully stopped the suspect. However, as officers approached, the suspect produced a firearm, prompting a shootout, according to APD. Both the suspect and Rebel were killed in the exchange.

“Rebel was a loyal and courageous member of the Albuquerque Police Department for seven years and served our city with honor and bravery,” the department posted on Facebook. “He was not only a partner to his handler but a valued member of our police family. His dedication and service will never be forgotten.”

Both the Miami Police officer and the driver were hospitalized in the incident, which began when the driver struck the officer with his car, the department said

The event was sponsored by the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund, which supports the families of NYPD and FDNY heroes killed in the line of duty

“Come for one of us & you’ll have the full force of the NYPD coming for you,” Commissioner Jessica Tisch said while announcing the arrest of the second suspected mugger

At one point, members of the crowd posed for selfies with a tagged LAPD cruiser; one officer required medical attention after being struck in the face with a bottle
