Joe Mazzulla talks Celtics two-way guard’s torn ACL injury

BOSTON — While the Celtics beat the 76ers to open up preseason action, they got some unfortunate injury news earlier in the day. C’s two-way guard Jay Scrubb tore his ACL at Saturday’s practice as he’s out indefinitely, likely ending his season.

The team announced Scrubb’s injury before the game Sunday. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla talked about the 23-year-old guard after the win over the 76ers.

“It’s painful to see him have to go through that because of this mindset that he’s brought from training camp and really in Summer League,” Mazzulla said. “As I told him, these are the type of things that guys have to just work through. And so I’ve kind of been through one of those when I was in a G-League with a player. So hopefully makes it a great recovery and happy that I’ve gotten to kind of see him grow.”

Scrubb was a Summer League standout for the Celtics in Las Vegas, impressing in his five games. He averaged 14.4 points and shot 40% from 3-point land as he looked like one of the best players on the squad. His performance in Vegas was enough to land him a two-way contract with the Celtics.

Scrubb was picked 55th overall in the 2020 draft by the Nets before being traded to the Clippers, becoming the first junior college player drafted since 2004. He spent two seasons in Los Angeles before landing with the Magic organization on a two-way deal in March 2023. Scrubb has appeared in 24 career NBA games, averaging 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.

Now, Scrubb will look to rehab his torn ACL. The Celtics will likely fill the two-way slot with another player considering Scrubb is unlikely to play this season. Boston’s other two-way signees are guard JD Davison and big man Neemias Queta.
