Jayson Tatum gushes about state of North Carolina, calls it home

Jayson Tatum has had some big games in his NBA career specifically in Charlotte, and there’s a good reason for that. Tatum only spent a lone season at Duke as part of a one-and-done career, but he still views the state of North Carolina in a fond light.

So after the Celtics beat the Hornets on Monday in Charlotte, Tatum only had complimentary words to say about the state. Tatum finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds in the C’s victory.

“It’s definitely one of my favorite places to come,” Tatum said, via NBC Sports Boston. “Obviously, I spent the year in the state at Duke. So I got a lot of connections obviously in Durham. But I know people in Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte … Winston-Salem.”

Tatum has repped Duke all the time throughout his NBA career. He said he often goes back during the summer for a day just to work out and be around the team. Tatum said he’s still close with the coaches at Duke, so there’s a great relationship dating back years.

Tatum spent one season at Duke from 2016-17 before he declared for the NBA Draft. He had a solid season for the Blue Devils, named to the All-ACC freshman team, which helped him go No. 3 overall in the 2017 draft. He’s been a star since then as Tatum has developed into one of the best players in the NBA.

“Early in my career, every time we would come back, I would go back to Duke and see the team because I still had my teammates back there that I was in school there,” Tatum said. “So there’s just a lot of love. Obviously, Duke fans. This place is like part of my story. I kind of feel a little bit at home when I come to North Carolina. So it’s always a special place to me.”
