In one semifinal, the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner faces the all-time leader in men’s major championships, No. 6 Novak Djokovic. Sinner nearly had his tournament end in the Round of 16 when No. 19 Grigor Dimitrov was up 6-3, 7-5, 2-2, but had to retire in the third set, allowing Sinner to advance to the quarterfinals, where he knocked off No. 10 Ben Shelton, 7-6(7-2), 6-4, 6-4. Djokovic’s path here was not as dramatic, but it has involved him bouncing back from first set losses in each of the last two rounds. In the quarterfinals against No. 22 Flavio Cobolli, Djokovic won 6-7(6-8), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.
The other semifinal features defending champion and No. 2 in the world, Carlos Alcaraz. Coming off a French Open championship in which he defeated Sinner in an epic five-set final, Alcaraz has been one of the best throughout Wimbledon. He opened the tournament with a five-set match against Fabio Fognini, but has not needed more than four since that 7-5, 6-7(5-7), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 contest. The quarterfinals were just his second straight set victory of the tournament, as he toppled Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. No. 5 Taylor Fritz will be on the opposite side of the net in the semifinals after getting through a pair of five-set matches on consecutive days to start the tournament. Outside of his Round of 16 matchup against Jordan Thompson, who retired, Fritz has gone at least four sets in all his matches.
