Have the Patriots reached out to Dante Scarnecchia to help with the O-line?

FOXBOROUGH – Is there any chance Dante Scarnecchia would come out of retirement to try and help rescue the Patriots troubled offensive line?

Speaking with the legendary coach following his jacket-fitting ceremony at the Patriots Hall of Fame ahead of his induction Saturday, it sure doesn’t sound like it.

First off, according to Scarnecchia, the Patriots haven’t even approached him. They haven’t called to see if he might work with Adrian Klemm and the offensive line on a consulting basis.

More to the point, even if they had connected with him, Scarnecchia would have declined the invitation.

“That ship has sailed,” Scarnecchia told MassLive when asked about the possibility. “I don’t talk to anyone over here because they’re busy. They got jobs. They’re doing what they have to do to try and win games.

“No one’s asking for any advice, and I respect that tremendously,” he went on. “I’m out of it. This is my fourth year in retirement and I’m enjoying it. I’m a creature of habit. I got my routines. I like to do the things I like to do, and I’m happy about it.”

Scarnecchia, now 75, spent 34 seasons with the organization under six different head coaches and four ownership groups, winning five Super Bowls with the Patriots.

Given the struggles of the offensive line this season, it’s natural to remember back to when Scarnecchia was in charge, and the success he had with the group.

Klemm’s first season coaching the line has gotten off to a rough start.

Thus far Mac Jones has been sacked 12 times, while pressured constantly. Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham have been sacked one time each.

Scarnecchia cited injuries and not being able to regularly put out the same five starters as contributing to the struggles of the Patriots offensive line. The lack of continuity has been the biggest issue, according to Scarnecchia.

Asked what words of wisdom he would share with Klemm, someone he coached as a player, Scar said the first-year Patriots offensive line coach shouldn’t try and reinvent himself.

“Just coach the hell out of it,” he said. “Keep chopping wood and keep doing what you’re doing and try as soon as possible to get five guys that can stay out there, work every week, and get the kind of results that everyone wants them to have.”
