Noah Syndergaard is now a free agent.
The Guardians released the starting pitcher on Wednesday, according to MLB’s transaction log. Syndergaard, who was designated for assignment earlier this week, made six starts for Terry Francona’s team after getting traded to Cleveland from the Los Angeles Dodgers. He went 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA.

Syndergaard is now free to sign with any other team. If he signs by 11:59 p.m. EST on Thursday, he’ll be eligible for the postseason. It’s unclear if a team will take a chance on the one-time New York Mets ace, especially after getting dropped by a 64-70 Guardians team.
It’s been a struggle for Syndergaard since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020. From 2015-19, he posted a 3.31 ERA, but hasn’t been able to get back to his dominant self since then. The Dodgers tried to get Syndergaard back on track this year. But after going 1-4 with a 7.16 ERA, they traded him to Cleveland.
The Guardians, who according to Fangraphs have a 5.5% of making the postseason, appeared to be out of contention and onto 2024. But their recent waiver claims of Lucas Giolito, Matt Moore and Reynaldo Lopez might prove they’re trying to defy odds and make a last-minute run.
