If the Cleveland Guardians make the 2023. playoffs, they’ll be able to thank some of the most unusual circumstances in baseball history.

They’re currently 64-70 on the last day of August. Normally that’s the record of a team that’s just going to play out its final 28 games as there’s no real way to upgrade a roster. But in 2023 the Angels made the unprecedented move of waiving several key players to cut salary.

So the Guardians pounced adding starter Lucas Giolito and relievers Matt Moore and Reynaldo Lopez according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan who tweeted:

“Big day for Ohio in the waiver world. Cleveland claimed right-handed starter Lucas Giolito, left-handed reliever Matt Moore and right-handed reliever Reynaldo Lopez. Cincinnati claimed outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Harrison Bader.

They started Thursday 11.5 games out of the wild card so if they’re going to the postseason, catching the Twins is their best show. Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona, who has thrived in Cleveland has intimated that he could retire after this season. The additions improve his chances of managing in the playoffs this year.

All three new Guardian pitchers will be free agents after the season.
