The cousin of the two Massachusetts brothers who died near a Rhode Island beach last week has created a GoFundMe campaign to help with “the overwhelming cost of laying two young men to rest.”
Aldino Centeio, 27, and Valdir Centeio, 31, both of Stoughton, went missing after an incident near Warrens Point Beach in Little Compton, Rhode Island, on July 12. Their bodies were recovered by officials the following day at around 11:15 a.m., near their last known location.
The two brothers were fishing off the coast when one of them fell into the water. The other “without hesitation, jumped in to try and save him,” according to the GoFundMe.
“That act of love and bravery speaks volumes about the kind of men they were — selfless, courageous and full of heart,” the fundraiser reads. “Aldino and Valdir leave behind a family and community devastated by their loss. They were sons, brothers, uncles, friends — bright, vibrant souls who touched the lives of so many.”
The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $33,000 as of Saturday afternoon, exceeding the initial goal of $30,000. There have been 464 donations as of Saturday.
The money will be used to cover funeral expenses, according to the GoFundMe’s description. Any remaining funds will be given directly to the brothers’ mother, Orlanda, “to help ease the financial burden she now faces — especially after the heartbreaking loss of her son, Aldino, who was the family’s primary provider.”
“We are reaching out to you — friends, family, neighbors, and compassionate strangers — to ask for your support during this incredibly difficult time,” the description reads. “Any donation, no matter the size, will help lighten the financial load and allow the family to focus on grieving and honoring the memory of Aldino and Valdir with the dignity and love they deserve.”
