Former Patriots QB came off bench to lead team to a win, will he get another shot this week?

Former New England Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer came in off the bench to help the Las Vegas Raiders beat his old team last week. But will the team run him back out this week — or give their young quarterback a chance?

That’s the question faced by head coach Josh McDaniels and the Raiders this week coming off the news that starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will not play this week due to a back injury he sustained against the Patriots, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The last time the Raiders went into a game knowing their top QB wouldn’t play was in Week 4, when Garoppolo was ruled out due to a concussion. That time around, rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell got the nod. However, it was Hoyer who got the nod as the in-game replacement for Garoppolo in Week 6.

The Raiders have not tipped their hand as to who their quarterback will be this week. O’Connell was the choice when the team had time to prepare. However, Hoyer was the steady hand who smoothly ran the offense against the Patriots to get the win that brought Vegas to 3-3 on the year.

Hoyer had a quiet, but efficient game against the Patriots, going 6-of-10 through the air for 102 yards. As for O’Connell, the rookie got the start against the Chargers in Week 4, going 24-of-39 passing for 238 yards and 1 interception. He finished that game with a passer rating of just 68.1.

So will the Raiders go for the steady hand, or give their rookie another shot to see what they have? It’s possible that we get an answer out of Vegas on Friday. It’s also possible the Raiders keep the Chicago Bears guessing as they head into their Week 7 matchup.
