Former Patriots captain wouldn’t be surprised to see Mac Jones return

The New England Patriots are checking things off their to-do list for the offseason and already have a new coach in Jerod Mayo. Another box they need to check is the quarterback.

Mac Jones had a lackluster Year 3 that saw him get benched four times before Bailey Zappe took over permanently as the starter for the remainder of the season. Jones didn’t take an important step forward, and a big question for 2024 is whether the Patriots will give him another chance or move on from the Alabama product.

If you ask James White, though, he can see Jones returning.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” the three-time Super Bowl champion joined MassLive Patriots reporter Karen Guregian to discuss why he believes the quarterback could return to New England for the 2024 season.

“I wouldn’t be surprised. Everybody’s saying, ‘trade and release’ and all that stuff. Maybe a change of scenery is possibly what he wants, which could be good for him,” White said. “But, I’ve been saying all along, I can very well see him being on the roster. He can be a guy competing for a starting job, whether he actually wins out or not, whether they draft a rookie, whether they bring in a veteran guy. He’s had success in this league the last two years. It hasn’t gone his way, but if you bring in the right offensive coordinator, you allow him to compete with somebody else, who knows what may shake out next season?”

A change of scenery might benefit Jones, but so could a revamped offense — including a new offensive coordinator.

It’s unclear what the future holds for Jones. It will certainly be interesting to see what Mayo ultimately decides to do at the position — especially with the Patriots holding the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and some intriguing free agent quarterbacks.
