Former NFL DB not convinced Bill Belichick is on borrowed time as coach of the Patriots

The Patriots look like they’re headed for a second straight losing season after a 2-5 start to the 2023 campaign. Between the slow start, how Mac Jones has played overall, and some offensive weapons not working out, that has left many to question how much longer Belichick’s job is safe.

One former NFL player, however, thinks there’s no way the Patriots move on from the coach who just earned his 300th win.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” former NFL defensive back and current Sirius XM’s “The Opening Drive” host Solomon Wilcots joined MassLive Patriots reporter Karen Guregian to provide an outside perspective of what he’s seen this year from New England. And while many have wondered if it’s time for the Patriots to move on from Belichick, Wilcots is not of that belief.

“I find that hard to believe, to be honest with you, because we’re talking about truly one of the legendary coaches that this game has ever seen in the 104 year history of our league,” Wilcots said. “Belichick is on the Mount Rushmore of great coaches along with Don Shula and George Halas — the other guys who’ve won 300 and more games. But just him as a manager, and as a coach and even if you count the championships. But the games won and the careers that he’s cultivated since coming into this league, whether it was as a defense coordinator when he was with the Giants, or as a head coach with the Patriots, he’s left his mark on this game in a way where you cannot tell the story of the NFL without talking about Coach Bill Belichick.

“So I think his legacy is cemented and I I just find it hard to believe that Bob Kraft is ready to move on from someone that he knows — in the conversations I’ve had with Mr. Kraft — how great coach Belichick is as a manager of resources drafting and as a head coach,” he added.

There’s certainly some momentum on the Patriots’ side after upsetting the Buffalo Bills in Week 7. And now another tough test awaits in Week 8 in the Miami Dolphins. If Belichick can win No. 301, it will be interesting to see if the narrative shifts.
