Former Mass. resident sentenced for embezzling nearly $40,000 from local labor union

A former Middleborough resident has been sentenced to two years’ probation for embezzling nearly $40,000 from a Lakeville union over the course of nearly a decade, the Massachusetts U.S. District Attorney’s Office said.

Oregon resident Andrea Anderson, 61, pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement from a labor union in October 2023, the U.S. Attorney’s office said in a press release. She was sentenced in federal court on Monday.

From 2013 to July 2022, Anderson worked as a part-time administrative employee for the Brotherhood of Shoe and Allied Craftsman (BSAC), whose union office was located inside her father’s garage in Lakeville, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. During this time, Anderson had control over the union’s checks and debit card and used these to embezzle nearly $39,169 from it over the years.

Anderson repaid the BSAC around $8,000, leaving the union with a loss of about $30,000, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. In addition to the probation, on Monday, the federal judge ordered her to pay a little over $30,000 in restitution and forfeiture.
