What once started as a trolley park in 1888 became a bustling theme park tucked atop Mt. Tom not far off Interstate 91 in the heart of the Pioneer Valley. Today, the beloved theme park stands vacant, leaving small remnants of the thrill that once was.
Before there was Six Flags in Agawam, there was Mountain Park in Holyoke, serving as one of the region’s entertainment destinations until its closure in 1987. A series of fires in 1994 and 1995 destroyed what was left on the Holyoke amusement park grounds and bulldozers cleared the debris in 2003, MassLive reported in a 2016 article.
In 2025, MassLive stood on its grounds, taking in the vast difference of the property almost 40 years after it closed.
The first thing you notice is the graffiti. Just about every manmade surface, be it building or pipe, left behind on the property is covered in graffiti from throughout the many decades.
The tens of thousands of gallons of water in an old wave pool have since been removed, leaving behind brush, debris and distant memories.
And perhaps the most eerie parts of the grounds are the structures left standing, covered in manmade graffiti but also overtaken by nature reclaiming its space on the mountain, silent and dark.
