The search for a swimmer who went missing at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth on Tuesday was suspended, the United States Coast Guard and the Falmouth Fire Department said.
The search for the swimmer was suspended at around 2:45 p.m., U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Rajesh Harrilal, a public affairs specialist at the Northeast District, told MassLive.
The Falmouth Fire Department was initially notified at around 12 p.m. that a swimmer went missing, according to a statement shared on Facebook. Two beachgoers told the staff at Old Silver Beach that they lost sight of another swimmer who was in the water, Harrilal said in a previous statement.
The person who went missing is said to be a man wearing a red shirt and a black swim cap, Harrilal said.
Firefighters, along with Falmouth police and the town’s Harbor Master personnel arrived to assist with the search, the fire department said.
“Our incident commander arrived on scene and was advised that at least two beachgoers reported that they saw a male swimmer wearing a red shirt and baseball hat in distress off the beach,” the fire department’s statement read. “They did not see the individual leave the water and became concerned, notifying the lifeguards, who immediately entered the water to begin looking for the swimmer.”
It is unclear if first responders will continue the search on Wednesday.
