Fair housing grants cut over inclusion of DEI language, HUD official says

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development slashed grant funding to groups tasked with combatting housing discrimination at the end of February because the awards allegedly contained diversity, equity and inclusion language.

In an affidavit filed Friday in federal court, Matthew Ammon, acting deputy secretary, said 78 grants — which included funding for the Massachusetts Fair Housing Center’s work in Western Massachusetts — had “language that specifically imposes DEI … and/or ‘equity’ actions … performance requirements, or preferences.”
