‘Everyone’s best friend:’ Beloved grandmother found dead after going missing

After 52 years of marriage, a Massachusetts woman raised three children and treasured six grandchildren. But her “family” was much bigger than that.

“Margaret was everyone’s favorite Aunt,“ Margaret Ann (Bowden) Hammersley’s obituary read. ”She was everyone’s best friend, and thanks to her example, the number of close friends surrounding her grew exponentially to become a vast network of extended ‘framily.‘”

Hammersley, born in Lowell, was found was found dead on March 21 in the waters of Forge Pond in the New Hampshire woods, the Westford Police Department said.

The 73-year-old, who lived in Nashua, New Hampshire, had gone missing and authorities first started searching for her on March 20 in the area of Bradford Street and Pleasant Street. Her vehicle was found empty Thursday evening in a parking lot near Pleasant Street.

“The Westford Police Department sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Margaret Hammersley and asks that members of the public and media respect the family’s privacy during this tragic time,” police said.

Friends called her “Margie”and she “loved creating memories with those she cherished,” including going to the theater, fancy tea rooms, craft fairs, chatting with her girlfriends during lunch and shopping at the Paper Store.

She also loved to travel with her husband, Ed, “and would often share photos from their vacations and from adventures with their family.”

“Regardless of where she was, though, Margaret’s favorite way to spend her time was with her treasured grandchildren,” her obituary stated.

Friends and family gathered for a visitation on March 27.
