Diet Coke Lime is back and is trying to make you feel old | Nick Ate It

Diet Coke Lime is back on store shelves. I don’t know why they ever got rid of it. This soda rules.

I’m glad it’s back. I’m just thrown off by Coca-Cola’s odd decision to try to make me feel old.

Officially, this product is labeled “Retro Diet Coke Lime.” This is an alarming name because it originally hit store shelves in 2004 and was last spotted in 2018.

Is Coke calling this soda “retro?” Or is it just applying a retro aesthetic to the can?

Either way, I don’t like that I just had to consider whether 2004 qualifies as “retro.”

Diet Coke with Lime | Review

I’m not a soda can scientist. But I dabble in the field.

Looking at the art on the can, I’m guessing that Coke was trying to invoke an art style of the late 70s or early 80s.

When I first looked at it, I had a moment of panic. I remembered drinking lime-flavored Coke. I wondered, “Did it look like that back then? Am I so old that I was drinking soda at a time when this was considered a cool design?”

It turns out that, no, I’m not quite that old. The last time Diet Coke Lime was on shelves, it had a different look. The can was silver and lacked stripes. There was also a less cartoonish lime image.

I feel somewhat validated, but still old. I woke up around 7 a.m. this morning without using an alarm clock. I’d never be able to explain that to myself from 2004.

What does it taste like?

What makes Diet Coke Lime stand out from other fruity Coca-Cola spinoffs is how the dry lime flavors really tame everything down into a more muted, balanced experience.

Coke is an acidic mudslide of corn syrup. Diet Coke gives it a higher-pitched buzz of sweetness with the aspartame. It’s simultaneously sweet and biting.

The lime is certainly prominent. You get a strong push of that zesty essence in each sip.

But that element is key. The lime gives the bite with a place to go in terms of flavor. It leans into the background hint of citrus that’s always present in any form of cola.

So is it any good?

I think so. It’s a solid spin on the original Coke formula.

You’re either going to like the lime flavor or hate it. There’s no getting around it. Personally, I’m a fan.

Overall, it’s a more mellow ride of flavor than you usually get with a Diet Coke. That’s a good thing. If I’m getting a sleeve of cans, I’m probably going to drink more than I should.

The final word

It’s weird how naming conventions work.

With this soda, I find myself almost exclusively calling it Diet Coke with Lime. Calling it “Lime Coke” sounds insane to me.

But with something like the cherry variation? It’s the opposite. It’s “Cherry Coke” or nothing. If someone called it “Coke with Cherry,” I’d be fully convinced that they were an elaborate AI program.
