City Council debates timing of SOI for a new high school

WESTFIELD — At the Feb. 10 meeting of the City Council, Superintendent Stefan Czaporowski presented the district’s vision for a new high school and the vote by the School Committee to submit a statement of interest (SOI) to the Massachusetts School Building Authority by April 11.

He said a vote of support by the City Council is necessary to go forward at this time. The Council sent the SOI request to the Legislative & Ordinance Subcommittee.

Czaporowski said the School Committee voted to submit the SOI to replace the Westfield Technical Academy, leaving the option in the application for consolidation with Westfield High School into a comprehensive or hybrid model school. He said while both high schools are in need of replacement, the Westfield Technical Academy is in rougher shape. The upper campus was built in 1931, the lower campus in 1962, and the connector, which he said was poorly built, in the 1990s.
