Nestled at 637 Main St., the Chatham Orpheum Theater stands as both a charming nod to the town’s past and a vibrant center of contemporary culture.
Originally opened in 1916, it was the first movie house in Chatham, sparking excitement with silent films, comedies and adventure stories for over seven decades.
Its ornate façade and art-deco styling, preserved even when repurposed as a pharmacy in 1987, has been maintained thanks to the steadfast passion of the community.
In November 2011, after years of disuse, a coalition of local citizens rallied to restore the theater. Within months, they formed a nonprofit organization and raised over $1.5 million to purchase and renovate the historic site.
Architectural firm Gensler led the massive restoration, which included rebuilding the original character while installing modern comforts. Their vision was realized in July 2013 with the first public screening of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” drawing patrons who queued down Main Street.
Today, the theater boasts two screens, a 50-seat and a 160-seat auditorium, plus a café by Pizza Shark, serving up pizza, sandwiches and wine, which visitors can enjoy during screenings.
It features 3-D projection, 6.1 surround sound, and plush seats with wide aisles, striking a balance between an upscale experience and small-town charm.
As a nonprofit institution, the Orpheum enriches the Cape’s cultural landscape with a diverse mix of films; first-run titles, art showcases, documentaries, vintage classics and local filmmaker events.
Special series, educational programs and free kids’ matinees anchored in community values have solidified its role as a cultural asset. The theater’s mission is to inspire, educate and entertain Cape Cod families.
The Orpheum continues to thrive through local support and philanthropy. Ticket prices aim to be family-friendly, with affordable rates for adults, seniors and children and free admission for select matinees.
