A shelter-in-place order for residents of Canton has been lifted after a woman was shot in a car on Monday night, according to the police department.
The shelter-in-place order had begun around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 15, for residents of the Canton Woods Apartments, Lamplighter Village apartments and any homes or businesses from Tracywood Road south to the Stoughton town line, a statement from the Canton Police Department said.
The order was lifted overnight into Tuesday, according to the Canton Police Department.
No specific time on when the order was lifted was immediately available at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The department stated more information on whether a person was in custody would be released later on Tuesday.
What happened?
Police and firefighters responded to the Lamplighter Village apartment complex at the intersection of Turnpike Street and Stagecoach Road for a report of a person shot around 6:40 p.m., Canton police said. At the scene, they found a woman in her 20s who’d been shot while sitting in a parked car. First responders treated the woman for serious injuries before taking her to a Boston hospital.
The preliminary investigation into the shooting indicates the woman was sitting in the driver’s seat of the car waiting to meet someone when a man shot into the car using a handgun, police said. A third person was sitting in the passenger seat of the car when the woman was shot, but they were not injured by the gunfire.
The suspect fled the scene following the shooting, police said. Investigators have not yet determined whether the shooter was the person the woman was waiting for.
The suspect is described as a skinny Black man in his late teens or early 20s, police said. He is believed to be around 5-foot-5 and was clean shaven and wearing a black beanie at the time of the shooting.
Massachusetts State Police troopers, the State Police Air Wing, several local K-9 and drone units and specialized regional law enforcement units are actively searching for the shooter, police said. Residents and travelers should avoid Route 138 in Canton while the search continues.
It is unclear what condition the woman is in as of 9 p.m. Monday. No further information about the shooting has been released.
