Canadian wildfire smoke prompts air quality warning for Mass. on Monday

Massachusetts could see hazy skies throughout the day Monday as wildfire smoke from Canada drifts into the Bay State.

The smoke prompted National Weather Service forecasters to issue an Air Quality Alert blanketing the entire state, warning that the air may be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

“Air is unhealthy for sensitive children and adults, such as those with asthma, lung or heart disease, and older adults,” forecasters wrote. “Sensitive children and adults should limit prolonged outdoor activity.”

The alert is in place until midnight on Monday, though the primary time period of concern is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., forecasters said. The smoke could linger into Tuesday morning, but may be less noticeable due to increased cloud cover.

Aside from the smoke, residents of the Bay State can expect an extended stretch of dry weather with seasonable temperatures and “tolerable levels of humidity,” forecasters wrote.

Uncertainty enters the forecast on Sunday, with the possibility of a tropical storm impacting New England.

Tropical Storm Dexter is expected to stay well southeast of the Bay State, suppressed by an area of high pressure from Nova Scotia. But another area of disturbed weather north of the Bahamas and southeast of the Carolina coast could make its way to New England on Sunday or early next week.

Still, forecasters said the area of weather only has a roughly 30% chance of forming. On top of that, it’s “tough to have much confidence in any potential outcome at this time,” they wrote.

“We`ll continue to monitor this area closely through the workweek but as of now, it`s way too early to pinpoint impacts, if there were to be any at all,” forecasters wrote.
