NEW YORK — The NYPD has released body camera footage of an officer-involved shooting of a man holding his mother in a chokehold.

The March 1 video release states that the Dec. 23 incident began when Officers Alex Morgese and Mohammad Hossain responded to a 911 call regarding a person armed with a knife who may have ingested drugs and was acting violently.

Upon entering the building, officers confirmed details with the 911 caller before entering the department where Michael Dotel, 30, was located, according to the release. When officers entered the apartment, they found Dotel holding a woman in a chokehold. Dotel also told the officers he had a knife.

“I have the knife … shoot me!” Dotel can be heard yelling on the body camera footage.

As the victim began to lose consciousness, Officer Morgese fired one shot at Dotel. Dotel was hit and fell to the ground, releasing the suspect. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The NYPD identified the victim as Dotel’s mother in a Dec. 23 press conference.
