ALBANY, N.Y. — The New York Attorney General’s Office released body-worn camera footage of an officer-involved shooting of a man who fired shots at officers on a freeway, according to a March 26 news release.

The Jan. 3 incident began when two New York State Police troopers pulled over a car they suspected of being involved in an earlier incident. Video shows the driver of the car, Rakim Tillery, jumping out of the car and running toward officers while firing shots.

The troopers returned fire, but Tillery continued to approach the troopers, resulting in a physical altercation. Body camera footage shows an officer and Tillery wrestling, each with a hand on the same gun.

After several seconds of wrestling over the gun, Tillery can be heard crying out. The video shows him wincing before apparently losing consciousness. The officer is able to stand up, holding the weapon the two were wrestling over.

Another officer’s body camera shows the altercation between Tillery and the first officer from farther away. Two gunshots can be clearly heard during the altercation.

Tillery was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release.
