BWC: LASD deputies fatally shoot man stabbing woman during home burglary

LYNWOOD, Calif. — Body-worn camera footage captured the intense moment a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sergeant fatally shot a man while rescuing a stabbing victim during a home burglary.

The incident unfolded just after 12:30 a.m. on June 9 when deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a residential burglary in progress, the department’s news release said. Upon arrival, deputies learned that a man, later identified as 45-year-old Federico Rodriguez, had broken into a residence and remained inside with the victim.

In the video, deputies observed Rodriguez through a window holding what appeared to be a pair of scissors. As they attempted to gain entry by breaking a bedroom window, they heard screams and saw Rodriguez begin stabbing the victim.

Deputies quickly forced entry through a door and confronted Rodriguez in the hallway. He was kneeling over the victim and actively stabbing her with a knife, according to LASD. It was at that point that a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire and deputies were able to pull the victim to safety.

Deputies provided medical aid to Rodriguez until Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived. Rodriguez was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No deputies or additional individuals were injured during the incident. A knife was recovered at the scene.
