SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police released body camera footage showing the moments leading up to a fatal shooting of a man by an officer following a foot pursuit, KSAT reported.
The March 16 incident began when an officer attempted to stop a vehicle and the driver failed to pull over, according to the report.
Police said the suspect eventually parked at a gas station, exited the vehicle carrying a bag, and fled on foot. The officer pursued him into a residential area, where the suspect can be seen on body camera footage jumping several fences.
The suspect then fell while trying to jump onto the roof of a home, video shows. The officer attempted to use a TASER, but it had no effect. At that point, the officer observed that the suspect was armed with a knife.
A second attempt to use the TASER was also unsuccessful. Police said the officer dropped the TASER on the ground and the suspect reached down and grabbed it. The suspect then advanced toward the officer, prompting the officer to fire multiple times.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report. Authorities later stated he had a criminal history involving drug possession, burglary and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
The officer has been with the San Antonio Police Department for four years. The incident remains under investigation, according to the report.
