Bruins rally to force OT, still fall to Ducks

BOSTON — The Bruins needed a replay from a successful challenge earn a point, but they still left frustrated.

Leo Carlsson snapped a rebound past Jeremy Swayman 3:39 into overtime to give the Ducks a 3-2 win over Boston on Saturday at TD Garden.

The Bruins (27-24-7) host the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

The Bruins were guilty of two of their more frequent sins in the first period. They have up late goals and goals bunched together.

After Trevor Zegras scored with 2:33 left in the first, former Bruin/UMass star/East Longmeadow native Frank Vatrano scored in his latest return to TD Garden with 38 seconds left in the first period to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

The Bruins got on the board on a 5-on-3 power play in the second. Elias Lindholm’s shot trickled through John Gibson with 10:52 remaining in the second.

Gibson left after the second period. But Lukas Dostal was solid in his stead and robbed Geekie on a breakaway to keep Anaheim ahead until late in the third.

The Duck duo combined for 29 saves. Swayman stopped 26 for the Bruins.

The Bruins lost Brad Marchand for a big chunk of the third. The captain lost an edge and crashed into the boards early in the third and crawled to the bench. He went to the dressing room for a long stretch but returned for the final minutes and set up the tying goal.

Morgan Geekie’s goal that made it 3-3 was original disallowed for goalie interference. But Joe Sacco’s challenge was successful forcing overtime.
