Boston was ‘obvious market’ for one of PWHL’s six teams; Name to be determined

The Professional Women’s Hockey League will begin its inaugural season in January, and the league revealed the six cities that will have teams on Tuesday morning.

Boston is among the six.

New York City’s Tri-State area and Minneapolis-St. Paul will be the other two United States-based organizations, while teams in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa will represent Canada.

“Boston is an obvious market for us,” Los Angeles Dodgers president Stan Kasten, who’s part of the PWHL ownership group, told reporters on Tuesday. “Boston provided a number of different alternatives for venues, some big and some small, and places to train. So, in terms of that, it really was a good fit for us.”

The Mark Walter Group purchased the assets to the Premier Hockey Federation in June, essentially dissolving the league that featured the three-time Isobel Cup champion Boston Pride. The PWHL is now the only professional women’s hockey league in North America.

“On behalf of ownership and our board, I am honored to announce the official name of our new league and to unveil the blueprint for this historic inaugural season. And we are especially proud to be providing this new platform for elite women athletes,” Kasten said in a statement. “Our great game has the power to captivate and connect sports fans everywhere, and we are thrilled to plant roots in six of North America’s most passionate hockey markets.”

A 10-day free agency period will begin on Sept. 1 when teams can begin to form their rosters. Each team can sign three players to a “Standard Player Agreement” during that time.

The 2023 PWHL draft is set for Sept. 18, and it’s expected that a majority of the league’s founding players will be selected during that time. A draft lottery will determine the order. Players must declare for the draft by Sept. 3.

Details regarding team names, logo, their home arenas and schedules — which will feature 24 games — will be announced on a later date. There is expected to be a break to accommodate the IIHF Women’s World Championship in April.
