Boston Road, Springfield shooting victim ID’d as Abdikadir Hussein, killed Saturday

One of the victims killed by gunfire in Springfield on Saturday, on Boston Road, was identified by Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni’s office on Wednesday.

Abdikadir Hussein, 31, of Springfield, was one of two gunshot victims in the area of Boston Road and Parker Street, Gulluni’s office said in a statement.

At around 2:35 a.m., Springfield police arrived to the aftermath of a car crash, where Hussein and a woman were both found with gunshot wounds.

The woman was taken to Baystate Medical, where she remains in critical condition, Gulluni’s office said. She was identified as the driver in the crash, police said. Hussein was dead.

Saturday’s fatal shooting is the 21st homicide of 2023 — the highest total in recent years.

Since 2017, the homicide rate in Springfield has averaged 18 cases a year. With five months remaining in the calendar year, the homicide rate has already surpassed the highest annual total in recent years when there were 20 homicide cases in 2019.

The Springfield Police Department’s Homicide Unite and the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit are conducting the investigation into the shooting.
