It’s been almost three weeks since MassLive’s last edition of its Bay State Conference boys basketball rankings.
Winter break tournaments are over, it’s a new year and programs are getting into the bulk of their conference schedules.
Through it all, a new team rose to the top of the rankings.
Newton North was in the No. 5 spot last month, but with a big recent win over Needham, the Tigers now sit on top.
The team lost back to back games over winter break against rival Newton South and Arlington, but wins against the Rockets and Brookline helped push the team to the top. Mathaios Stamm had 22 points in the big win over Needham.
Newton North’s next game is on Friday against Milton.
Needham slid down one spot following the loss to the Tigers. The defeat was the team’s first of the season, having previously won seven in a row. The program has key wins over Catholic Memorial, Brookline and Walpole already on its resume. The Rockets get back on the court Friday against Wellesley.
Wellesley is one of the biggest risers in this week’s rankings, going from No. 7 to No. 4.
The team’s big win over Walpole gave it a boost. The team has another win against Sharon on its resume. The program has struggled to earn wins, but it does have one of the most front-loaded schedules in the conference this season, having games against Milton, Newton North, Brookline and Doherty all in a row to open the winter.
The program’s next game is on Friday against Needham.
