Ayer woman facing 30 animal cruelty charges, prosecutors say

A 77-year-old woman was set to be arraigned in Ayer District Court on Monday on 30 counts of animal cruelty, according to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office.

Ruth Maxant-Schulz, of Ayer, is facing the charges in connection with an investigation that resulted in 162 animals being seized, Sarah Lamson, a spokesperson for Ryan’s office, said in an email.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the search or what led prosecutors to charge Maxant-Schulz.
