WESTFIELD — As a condition of getting access to state and federal grant opportunities, every five years the city creates a new Open Space and Recreation Plan and it needs input from area residents to help guide the committee as it sets new goals for open space and recreation.
“The open space plan essentially allows the city to assess the current conditions of open space and recreation and then set goals for the next 10 years … so the plan is good until 2036,” said Anna Meassick, the city’s conservation director. “The survey allows us to get feedback from the public about what they’re looking for.”
To fill out the survey, it’s important to understand the definition of open space. It is defined as conservation, forest, recreation and agricultural lands, and amenities such as green buffers on roadways. Open space can be used for both passive and active recreation.
