The Agawam boys wrestling team opened its home schedule on Tuesday night, cruising past Ludlow for a 60-9 win.
Though Ludlow struck first, winning the two opening bouts to jump to a 9-0 lead, Agawam responded by winning 10 consecutive matches, nearly all by pin, to pull away decisively.
The Brownies controlled the floor in middle and upper weights with late performances by Joey Papadakis, Tyler Gervais and Will Olsen helping seal the dominant win.
“Their energy was fantastic. They wrestled really hard,” Agawam coach Armando Ramos said.
The girls’ mat followed a similar early script, as Ludlow jumped out with a 12-point lead. A forfeit at 138 pounds put Agawam on the board with six points, and Gaby Ramos delivered the first and only pin in the match for the Brownies. Performances by Ludlow’s Samantha Bertini and Riley Morais secured a final score of 18-12.
The Ludlow boys’ team will travel to Wayland for a tournament on Saturday while Agawam looks ahead to the annual Phil Tomkiel Holiday tournament, held on Monday, Dec. 29 at Agawam High School.
“They’re making some early season mistakes, it gives us a lot to work on,” Ramos said. “We’re wrestling hard, but we definitely have to work on the technical aspect.”
