76ers stars out for Celtics preseason opener Sunday

The Celtics and 76ers both open their preseason slate of games when they meet at 6 p.m. Sunday at TD Garden. But neither team will feature most of their rotation players for large parts of the game.

The 76ers will be without stars Joel Embiid and James Harden, per the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Keith Pompey, though it doesn’t appear to be injury-related. De’Anthony Melton and Furkan Korkmaz are both out for the Sixers, as well. The absences aren’t a huge surprise considering it’s the preseason.

The Sixers are also in limbo because of the Harden saga as he didn’t show up to media day. There hasn’t been too much drama since Harden has showed up to practices.

But he requested a trade and has publicly called Sixers president Daryl Morey a liar. So it’s unclear whether the team will actually move him, but the Harden saga puts the team in an awkward spot.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said their plan is go with light minutes for most of their players to see how they feel. But it’s important to note the Celtics have a back-to-back despite it being preseason as they play the Knicks in New York on Monday.

Everyone should be active, Mazzulla said, including additions Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.
