Your $1 bill could be worth thousands to collectors

$1 bills with errors on them might go unnoticed by the average person. But to collectors, they’re worth a whole lot more than $1.

Typically money has unique serial numbers on it. But $1 bills printed in 2016 had an error, which matches serial numbers printed in 2014, according to Worthy Nickel. The blog claims these $1 bills have been worth up to $150,000 by collectors.

The money would have “series 2013″ and have a “B” Federal Reserve Seal above the serial number. The serial number would be between B00000001* – B00250000* or B03200001*-B09600000* and it would have a star at the end of the number.

US Currency Auctions, an online auction site, states that “various types of currency errors sell for several hundred to over $1,000 each, depending on the series year, denomination, variety and condition, and are well worth keeping an eye out for.”

Other types of errors includes missing the first print, an inverted overprint and shifts in prints.

There are also bills that have “fancy” serial numbers that collectors are interested in.

For example, a $2 bill with a solid serial number, meaning it’s all the same number, can be worth more than $6,000. Or a $1 bill with a serial number that has all 0 other than one number can be worth more than $1,500.

These bills are rare, meaning your $1 bill might be worth only $1.
