Young QB cut by Patriots gets scooped up by Super Bowl rival

It didn’t take long for Nathan Rourke to find a new home in the NFL.

After being waived by the New England Patriots on Monday, the 25-year-old quarterback was scooped up on waivers by the New York Giants, per the NFL transaction wire.

Rourke, who was a standout with the CFL’s BC Lions being heading to the NFL, joined the Patriots of December of 2023. Rourke signed a one-year extension to stick around in New England this offseason.

However, with the team adding both Drake Maye and Joe Milton in the NFL Draft, Rourke was the odd man out in a crowded quarterback room.

The Patriots now have four quarterbacks on the roster, including newly signed veteran Jacoby Brissett, the returning Bailey Zappe and the rookie duo of Maye and Milton.

Rourke has yet to appear in an NFL regular-season game. However, his youth and experience in the CFL makes his a fascinating prospect.

Rourke now heads to New York where he’ll be expected to compete for a backup spot behind Daniel Jones. Rourke’s biggest competition will be quarterback Tommy DeVito, who gained popularity during a stretch as a fill-in starter last season.

This isn’t Rourke’s first contact with the Giants. Before making his first start in the CFL, Rourke had a workout with the Giants back in 2021 — as a wide receiver.
