The New York Yankees are giving former Boston Red Sox slugger Franchy Cordero and perfect game thrower Domingo Germán the boot from their MLB roster.
On Thursday, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman reported that Cordero and Germán were among the players placed on outright waivers. That means they can be claimed by any of the 29 MLB teams. If not, they can either accept an assignment down to the minor leagues or elect free agency.

The 29-year-old Cordero played two seasons in Boston, coming over in the trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals. Cordero played 132 games with the Red Sox as he bounced between the MLB club and Triple-A Worcester.
Cordero started the season on the Yankees’ Opening Day roster before fizzling out. He was sent down to the minors at the end of April, making only brief stints on the MLB roster down the stretch. He hit .188 with a .690 OPS in 24 games with New York.
The Yankees are also moving on from Germán, who made headlines after throwing the 24th perfect game in MLB history. Outside of that stellar game, Germán had a rocky run in New York. In 2019, he was suspended 81 games for violating the MLB’s domestic violence policy. Back in May, he was hit with a 10-game suspension after umpires determined he used foreign substances to improve his grip. In August, he was placed on the restricted list for alcohol abuse.
Over six seasons with New York, Germán went 31-28 with a 4.41 ERA.
